Teaching Culture

(In progress)

Background

English Lingua Franca... One of the goals in TEFL is for the learners to develop intercultural communicative competences that will enable them to interact in the local society as well as the global society.
How can we teach culture through TEFL  and decrease prejudice and help the pupils to see diversity as a valuable resource? To interact in a multicultural classroom, society (dynamic concept of culture, view Byram etc.)
This FAD will deal with teaching culture in the very early stages of EFL teaching, namely grades 3 and 4, because children at this age are less tightly attached to  the social systems they interact in than old learners (Bronfenbrenner).. assimilation, prediction, accommodation, fossilisation? ...

Research question

How can TEFL prevent/decrease prejudice in young learners (grade 3 and 4)?

Theory

Byram, Kramsch, Gregersen, Risager, Dynamic View on Culture, Third place,
Piaget: Assimilation and accommodation
Yes! I made a mistake (language learning) – Predicting as a part of the learning process – hypotesis testing.. (young learners might still have this ability – to a bigger extent than older learners) – hypothesis testing
Transfer of knowledge theories? Bereiter, Carl et al.: Surpassing Ourselves,

Discussion

Yes! I made a mistake (language learning) adapted to “culture learning”
Piaget: Assimilation and accommodation – fossilization – prejudice, hypothesis testing
Transfer of knowledge, asking questions, predicting, minus fossilization, moving to other areas of learning.

Practical examples:

Show them pictures and videos – and read stories that can help them wonder.
