Background
The topic of coursebooks for TEFL caught my interest a while back when I was in my 3rd semester’s practice placement period in Denmark and wanted to produce my own teaching material from a set of different books. There were two main reasons for me doing so. 1 was that the topic taught was American culture and I wanted the pupils to see it from various angles, not just from one coursebook and the other reason was that I – with my little experience – wanted to get to know a variety of the excisting teaching material for English.
I spent my 4th term/semester in Finland and in Finland my interest for coursebooks grew even stronger, mainly because here, the use of coursebooks is very common in all subjects and is seen as one of the strong assets of the Finnish education system.
So how should I approach coursebooks in TEFL and which theories for foreign language teaching approaches can back-up and reson my decision?
